How are PTSD and complex PTSD different?

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental disorder that develops after a traumatic or life-changing event. Some common examples include military combat, physical assault, natural disasters, and significant accidents. People with PTSD are frequently troubled by painful and disruptive reminders of the event.

Complex PTSD is unique because it occurs after repeated exposures to trauma, often over a few to several years. Long-term sexual abuse and domestic violence are two examples of situations that can lead to complex PTSD. Because it’s a more complicated illness, complex PTSD can cause more severe symptoms than PTSD.

What are the signs of complex PTSD?

PTSD symptoms include:

  • Being startled easily
  • Being excessively watchful of your surroundings
  • Avoiding anything that triggers symptoms
  • Flashbacks to the traumatic event
  • Nightmares involving the traumatic event
  • Unwelcome memories of the traumatic event
  • Irritability
  • Depressed mood
  • Frequent anxiety
  • Feelings of numbness

Complex PTSD can cause all these and lead to difficulty expressing emotions, poor self-esteem, and problems maintaining healthy relationships.
